What is a Composite Fire Door?

Composite fire doors are made up of special layers of material. These have a high level of heat resistance to prevent fire from passing through. There are two main parts to an FD30 fire door that make it effective against the high temperatures found in a building fire: the core and the outer skin. However, the frame and the fixtures also need to be adapted to be fire resistant.

The Core & Outer Skin

The centre is usually created from a solid timber core or a high-density material. It can also feature double length intumescent strips that will expand when they come into contact with heat. This creates a smoke seal around the external or internal fire door so anyone in an adjacent room to the door will not be exposed to fumes and dangerous particles.

This fire safety core is sandwiched between an outer skin which is also resistant to extreme levels of heat. It's usually glass reinforced plastic (GRP composite doors), but High Pressure Laminate is also used. This can give the fire door colours of your choice to match your home.

The Frame & Hardware
